There are many ways to play pocket aces incorrectly. I know that since my first time to hold pocket aces in middle position I’ve been trying to emulate the Crazy 88 method of playing pocket kings. You can’t really blame me, though, if you try this and lose… you are just one of the unfortunate 99.9% of all card players who can’t seem to get it together and stick to the Big 4 punt.
The average winning hand of pocket aces isA-K-Q. The problem is that many players will play ANY two suited cards.
Let’s say that you bet out with your aces in middle position. You get two callers. If you have average cards, you probably lead out with a somewhat reasonable bet, such as three times the big blind or four times the BB. How might the flop play out? alphabetical arrangement?
That’s when you hit your ace. You bet out. Your opponent bets out. The turn and river do the same. You’ve got a free ace, at least. If he had deuces, he probably would’ve stayed in for the river, placed a big bet, and you would’ve had to fold.
Don’t try to stuff your straight forward.
For another view, consider what would have happened had your opponent raised you pre-flop in middle position:
a) Your opponent calls and you hit your ace. You bet out for half the pot.
b) Your opponent calls and you still have your aces. You bet out for half the pot.
c) Your opponent calls and you have nothing. You don’t bet out.
Calling by the big blind is tricky business. You want to trick him into thinking you have a monster so he doesn’t raise you. But by going over the top of him pre-flop, it might mean he actually has aces.
The key to playing ace king is knowing when you want to trick somebody and when you don’t.

Getting caught and going all-in are the two biggest scenarios that you want to avoid. Being trapped is worse than having an ace.
When you have ace king and you are a big stack, you can get a guy with pocket 2s to 3s and take their whole stack… forever. And this happens fairly often. If you ever find yourself short, and situation like this one presents itself, don’t hesitate to push all-in. You will probably win the pot. Why not just tighten up, wait for a better opportunity.
When you have ace king, you are so small, you can get a guy with lower cards to your kings in an all-in situation. This is an automatic win. Push all-in, unless the other player has a big stack and wants your loss. If they have less than you, they will protect their stack. So they will call you with less than pocket 2s. Tips for playing aggressively with ace king.
- Continue to raise pre-flop when you are the first to enter the pot.
- Play your ace king as an ace heads up or heads up. Be aggressive and don’t allow somebody to call you with a smaller pocket pair.
- If somebody re-raises you, fold. It doesn’t matter if you have ace king or not.
- Don’t be afraid to fold ace king to a raise. Often times a larger raise will scare away your opponents.
- If you are playing aggressive tournament poker, chances are, you will face down more aggressive players.
